Spouses

Support, support, support

Spouses are in a reverse-role too
Most at-home dads are married and, as such, have spouses that are in a unique role as well. Though women are an established and accepted part of the work force, they can still face tensions internally and externally for their decisions to pursue their careers. Some wives have the same opinions about masculinity as men and can develop a negative feeling toward their husband who is at-home or they may feel inadequate as a woman who is working instead of caring for their children as society has prescribed.

Advancement of her career
At-home dads play a crucial role in the success of their working partner. They can provide a stable home environment that allows their wife to advance her career much faster than it would be possible if the children were in daycare.

Confident at-home dad required
In order to help his wife to feel comfortable in her boundary-breaking role and to help advance her career, an at-home dad must become confident in his role. Connecting with other at-home dads is the key. In a 2007 study on Stay-At-Home Fathers, Dr. Aaron Rochlen, Associate Professor of Counseling Psychology at the University of Texas-Austin, found that:

“Men who reported high levels of social support reported higher levels of relationship satisfaction, psychological well-being (i.e., less distress), and overall were more satisfied in their lives.”
